Keeping MDI Cozy

MDI Community Woodbank is committed to keeping our neighbors warm each winter by providing donated, sustainably sourced firewood to families in need.

Our volunteers carefully cut and split the wood, delivering warmth to local families while strengthening community and resilience across Mount Desert Island.

MDI Community Woodbank is a public 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors Stay Warm

The MDI Community Woodbank is dedicated to keeping Mount Desert Island residents warm during the winter. Modeled after the Downeast Wood Bank, our volunteer-driven organization provides free firewood to neighbors in need and connects them with additional social services when necessary.

With heating costs rising and many households relying on wood for heat, the Woodbank fills a critical need. Hardwood donations and cash contributions help us cut, split, and provide wood to families struggling to stay warm. Volunteers, labor, and equipment are also welcome to help support our mission.

How to Help or Get Wood:

  • Donate Wood: Hardwood logs or rounds can be dropped off at Hamilton Station, #831 State Rt. 3, Bar Harbor.

  • Donate Funds: Cash, checks (made out to “MDI Community Wood”), or Venmo and Paypal contributions are accepted on our Giving Page.

  • Donations can also be made anonymously at Machias Savings Bank.

  • Volunteer: We welcome help with splitting, stacking, and other support tasks.
